Scratchboard is regarded as one of the most difficult media to master as it requires attention to fine detail and excellent drawing skills. It does not allow for many mistakes.

It is a direct form of etching in which black ink is scratched with a sharp tool to reveal white clay below, resulting in an image which can then be coloured if desired.

It consists of three layers, a masonite panel coated with white clay, which is then thinly covered with a layer of black ink.

Irfan enjoys working with this non-traditional medium and wants to help give scratchboard the recognition it deserves as a fine art medium.
